Jesse wasn't actually dangerous. Well, not in the common sense of the word. But he was bored. His life was boring. The world, for him, was boring. Everything was boring. And from the moment that their President had died, he thought that everything got worsen.
He wasn't insensitive. Well, maybe a little bit, but honestly his life sucked enough without seeing all those pining people all around. He needed to see an happy face. A smile. Just once. He needed it like some fresh air. Living in that little city was suffocating him.
He had lived there since the day he was born. He knew almost everyone, thanks to his father, who was the principal of the high school, and everyone knew who he was, and he hated it. He would have liked so much more to be a normal guy there, so people would have not expected too much from him. If you are the son of someone 'important' for the society, you have a big load on your shoulder and it was a load that Jesse didn't want at all. Actually it was funny how, despite the fact to be the principal's son, he was good at nothing - at least in his studies. He was good at something, actually, but no one seemed to care if those things weren't related to school. So, for everyone he was a shame in his father's life. Thank you so much.
After two failures at school - and to prevent him to become a total 'bad guy' - his father took Jesse with him, basically recruiting him to fix several stuff in the school. But Jesse loved so much more to work in the workshop. It was a property of Charlie, one of his best friend, older than him, and since he always needed some help there, Jesse was more than willing to help. Plus, he was starting to earn something for himself. He loved to put his hands into the gears and he didn't care if his hands got dirty. He simply loved to feel the sounds of those cars, the smell of the oil and even the sweat on his forehead. It was like he could bring them back to life with his hands. But, of course, this wasn't supposed to be the right path to follow for the principal's son.
Jesse had always thought that personal desires and aspirations were something that should have been encouraged, not ditched like dirt if they weren't right for the common sense.
He had tried to do what his father wanted, to become the man he wanted. God knows if he had tried, but it wasn't his choice, and sure as hell it wasn't the life that he wanted to live. Jesse was twenty years old and he was grew up enough to decide what to do on his own. Too pity he hadn't enough money yet to leave and sure he didn't want to ask to his father. The only choice he had it was to run away and try to find something that allowed him to live, but he knew this would broke his dad's heart. He didn't want to do this to him. Not yet. And plus, as already told, he was starting to earn some money at the workshop so, maybe, in a few time, he could have been able to do something on his own and to go somewhere else.
Since the day his mom died, it was just Jesse and his father, and he knew that sometimes he had made his life miserable. But Jesse was different from him, like he was different from all the other people there, for many reasons. This was the reason why he didn't really have many friends. Actually, he had only two real friends and he have to thank them every day of his life. They were like brothers for him and, even if he wasn't the kind of guy that admit things like that, he loved them and he thanked them for everything they did for him. They offered their friendship to him, they never judged him, they tried to understand his being and plus, Charlie had taken Jesse with him at the workshop. The others? Well, it's not nice to say that, but he used them when he needed it, or scared them if it was a better choice. He just wanted to live his life in peace.
Seeing that he couldn't leave yet, he really needed to see some new faces, to know someone new. In that city everything was always the same: the houses, the people, the shops. He couldn't remind a spark of life since... ever.
But then... Jesse had seen him.
He had noticed the truck of the furniture in front of the house the day they arrived. He was passing by with his friend's car for a test drive and he saw him.
He was standing in the garden, looking at the house with his nose up and Jesse had thought that he was the cutest thing he had ever seen. He was lean and not really tall, but his body was simply perfect for him. His hair were shining under the sun and when he turned to look at one of the delivery men Jesse could see his profile and he thought that even his nose was cute.
Maybe this requires an explanation. Like it wasn't enough that Jesse was a 'good at nothing', he was gay. Actually he had claimed to be bi-sex for a long time, but the truth was that he did prefer guys. A lot. He never admitted out loud to his father because he didn't want to make him suffer, but he didn't even want to be the one that suffered pretending to be who he wasn't.
He knew that in a little city like that, his name would be destroyed if someone would have seen him in some 'embarrassing situation' - thing that he knew had already happened - but honestly, after too many years, he didn't care. His life was his life and the more the people seemed to be shocked for his behavior, the more he enjoyed to shock them. He was bored, as already told.
He also knew that someone had gone to talk to his dad about his attitudes, because he remembered perfectly one night, when he was came home late and he had found him on the couch, reading a book. His father had looked up at him and had closed the book, before rising from the sofa.
"I've tried to do my best with you, but somehow it didn't work. I don't want to hear a word about what you do or not. I don't want to be ridiculed in front of the whole city, for heaven's sake! Why don't you start to think to the other persons, instead to act like a selfish kid?"
Jesse remembered that he had tried to say something, because he didn't like the implications of his dad's words, and he didn't like the disappointed look on his face, but he had stopped him. "I've been a good father, God know I've been. You can't blame me for what you are. Stay away from troubles. Don't force me to take some hard decisions." And with that his father had disappeared, leaving a bitter taste in Jesse's mouth and some tears that were stinging his eyes.
He didn't understand what he had meant with 'hard decisions', but he did know what his dad was talking about in general: his sexual orientation. His blood had frozen and his heart had started to pound so hard it hurt. He was really sorry. He knew that his father was disappointed and angry at him, but they were talking about something that he was, not something he could decide to change. From then on, he had tried to catch up random guys outside the city, but sometimes he had broken his rules and he had got carried away in his hometown. Oh, well, again, this is who he was.
And this is why that when Jesse had seen that guy and his smile, he had couldn't help but trying to know who he was.
Considering his age he was sure he was going to attend their high school, so he casually drove in front of his house at the time he thought he was going to left it. And he was right.
He was walking down his alleyway toward the gate and he saw him looking up like he was hearing something weird. The guy had turned toward a window but then, finally, he had looked at Jesse.
Man, he was really absolutely cute. Jesse couldn't help but smile and he moved his fingers in greeting. He could see the puzzled expression of the guy and he thought that he wasn't going to reciprocate but then he had waved his hand and Jesse just grinned wider before accelerating.
That morning Jesse was supposed to fix a leak in some pipes in the basement of the school but he did it in a hurry because he wanted to be out in the courtyard for the break.
Johnny and Charlie, his two best friends, were waiting for him near the fence. They knew he was there and they wanted to spend some time with him. It was always like that with them. They were like family. Jesse greeted them and he light up a cigarette, leaning against the fence.
"Still busy with daddy's commitment?"
Jesse was looking around, searching for a face in the crowd of the students that was going out for the break.
"Jesse, is everything ok?"
Charlie was poking him with his elbow and Jesse turned to look at his cold and shiny blue eyes.
"Yeah, sorry. I just spaced out."
Charlie was shorter than him but he was strong like a bull. He really seemed a bad guy and he loved to get involved in fights. His blond hair was longer than most of the other guys and the grease was all over them. He was smoking a cigarette and looking intently at his friend.
He knew everything about Jesse, like Johnny, but they didn't share his same passion for the guys. However, they didn't care about his sexual preferences. Indeed, they weren't popular as well.
"Why do you seem so interested in these students all so suddenly?" he whispered resting his chin on Jesse's shoulder, trying to follow his gaze.
Johnny jumped up and sat on the fence, leaning over with his elbows on his knees.
"Yeah, Charlie is right. Tell it to your fellows!"
Johnny was smiling and Jesse looked at him with the same smile. Johnny was different from Charlie, more gentle and less aggressive, but his height was so exaggerated the he could be scary as hell, especially when he was pissed off.
"Well, I... I met a guy" he said shrugging, blowing out the smoke, turning again to look at the boys in the courtyard.
"Oh? Really? A guy? Who is he?" Charlie was smiling now.
"A new one. Actually I didn't really meet him. Let's say that I've seen him twice and I greeted him."
And he smiled, he wanted to add but he didn't. A smile. An happy face. Everything that Jesse needed at that time.
Johnny snickered and patted his friend on the shoulder.
"This is very kind from you. I thought that you have already fucked him. Greeting is not really your normal behavior."
"Asshole!" Jesse hissed punching his shoulder. "This guy is different, ok?"
Both his friends raised his eyebrows and looked surprised. "How do you know that if you don't really know him?"
"I feel it."
I've seen his smile.
Just at that time, Jesse saw him again. He was with Joey Ponti - shit! - and they were going out the door toward the courtyard. He was on the stairs and Jesse knew he had noticed him immediately.
"I guess it's him," Johnny whispered near to Jesse's ear, noticing that he was staring at the guy. "He doesn't seem anything that special, Jesse. I'm not into men but I've seen better looking guys going away with you."
Jesse glared at him for a moment and then he turned to look at that guy again, smiling at him. He was far from him, but Jesse could see that he was blushing and he was flustered. He had to force himself to stay there and not going close to him. Plus, that Ponti guy was clearly giving him an hard time. Jesse bet he was saying many nice things about him.
"Why do you like him?" Charlie asked studying the guy.
"I don't know," Jesse answered honestly, "but there's something in him that makes me want to smile."
He didn't expect to say something like that. True, they were his best friends but these chick flick sentences were forbidden between them. And where the hell those words were came out from?
"Awwww, you really say the nicest things ever! So, what? Is it love at first sight?" Charlie was laughing and Johnny was doing the same. It was his fault and he knew that. He hoped not to blush when he turned and shoved them both.
"You are such an idiots!"
He didn't have the chance to talk to that guy during the break and he knew that he couldn't simply go straight to him in front of everyone. He wouldn't have been a good idea for his reputation. Not so soon at least.
So, after the school, he decided to make his move. He didn't know what to do or what to say and that it was really weird for him because he never cared about a stranger. He shrugged off those doubts and grinned.
Andy was doing some doodles on his notebook, thinking back to what had happened before and just then he realized the meaning of Joey's words. If this Jesse guy liked boys and he had greeted him, maybe... He shook his head and he tried not to think about it. It was impossible. And it wasn't the right time and the right place. He was just moved in that city and he had to focus on his life and his targets. He couldn't spend his time thinking about the first - maybe - gay guy that greeted him. He wasn't really succeed, though.
After the lessons had ended he slipped away with an excuse, because he wasn't able to bear more talks with Joey. He was funny enough, after all, but they weren't really on the same page.
Andy took a small run to reach the corner without been seen from anyone and then he started to walk normally.
Jesse had taken his car immediately after the end of the lessons and he had started to drive around the school, until he had seen him, walking on the sidewalks. He slowed down and he approached the guy.
Andy heard the sound of a car behind him but he didn't pay attention. He was walking with his hands down in my pockets, with his face buried on the neck of the jacket and he noticed the car only when it was passing slowly near to him.
"Hey, kid!" Andy heard that call and stopped abruptly, stumbling and almost falling on his face. He turned slowly toward the car and again he saw that smile.
Jesse was leaning toward the passenger window, one arm resting on the steering wheel. He had seen Andy stumbling ahead and he had feared that he was about to fall, but then the guy had turned to him and Jesse had to swallow to stay calm. He was really cute. No, for him, he was so damn beautiful. He could see what Charlie had meant earlier. He wasn't the kind of guy that make you turn your head, but there was something on his face that made it the most beautiful face he had ever seen. He couldn't stop staring.
Now, Andy could look at Jesse closer than that morning and what he was thinking the same: he was looking at one of the most beautiful guy he had ever seen. Jesse's eyes had a deep shade of blue, his hair was impossibly black, just like his long eyelashes. His mouth was deep pink, almost red, big and soft and Andy had to remind how to speak before he could answer.
"He-hey" he murmured, not really knowing what to say. And then again... kid? Seriously?
Honestly, the first word that came into Jesse's mind had been 'baby' but he didn't think that it was the right way to approach the guy if he didn't want to scare him.
"You're new here, right?" Jesse said, still smiling.
His voice was low and a little bit husky. Andy had noticed that he was smoking outside the school, so he thought that this could be the reason. But it was also so pleasant and soft in some way. He felt a weird feeling in his stomach.
Andy nodded and he tried to smile, not sure if he was feeling embarrassed or flattered. But then again, flattered for what? Jesse could be a serial killer for what he knew.
"I saw you at school. it's kinda hard to miss a new face," Jesse continued, "You were talking with Ponti, right?" He chuckled. "I just can imagine what he said about me." Then he giggled and he tried to look Andy's eyes, but the guy was trying to avoid his gaze. Jesse had smiled for the whole time because he wanted that Andy could feel at ease. Despite the fact that everyone thought that he was dangerous, he wasn't for real. And he wasn't absolutely dangerous for that guy. He knew that Ponti had told to him the worst things about him and, somehow, he wanted to show that he wasn't the monster they were used to describe.
Andy felt embarrassed in a way he had never been. He didn't understand why this guy was so interested in him, because he was really sure that there was nothing that interesting in him. Without even realizing, he blushed and shook his head.
"Oh, nothing special..." Andy lied, when he finally found the strength to answer, and Jesse seemed to understand that because he laughed heartily. Andy was blushing all over while he answered.
"Honestly, I don't care what they say about me. I just hope that you can give me a chance to demonstrate he is wrong."
Andy looked at him, biting his bottom lip. Why that guy was so much interested in getting to know him? It didn't make any sense.
Jesse, on his hand, took a moment to look at the guy. He was lean and delicate exactly like he had noticed the day before and he felt the urge to take him into his arms and squeeze him. This was weird. Really, inconceivably, absolutely weird. His hair was light brown and a little bit long, curling on the neck. His eyes were so green that amazed Jesse and the freckles that covered his nose made Jesse want to lick them. Shit, what was happening to him? It was possible the he already like the guy?
No. No way.
Maybe.
Finally, Andy dared to look at him and he grinned shyly. "I don't care about the rumors," he said then.
"Ha! I knew he had said something!" Jesse laughed at his words even if he felt a knot in his stomach. That Pont guy could really be the a pain in the ass!
Andy felt his face flushing and he started to shift his weight from foot to foot, feeling so stupid. Jesse's reaction made him even more flustered and he stammered.
"I-I'm going now," he murmured because he needed to run away from the embarrassment. "I have to go home."
Jesse was a little bit disappointed but he could understand. There was only another thing to do, because he had decided that he had to know his name.
"Ok, sure! I'm Jesse, by the way," he said reaching out the window.
"Andy," the other guy replied shaking his hand. It was warm and a little bit callous but he enjoyed the feeling. Very much.
Jesse was taken aback from the touch. He felt a shiver and it hadn't ever happened to him before. Andy's hand was so warm and soft, so different from his'. His long fingers were wrapped around Jesse's hand and he didn't want to ever let them go. He stared at him for a moment but eventually he had to let him go. He smiled again and then he went away, because he was really overwhelmed.
Andy. The perfect name for a cute boy. In that moment a thought passed through his mind again. He looked so pure... maybe he had to leave him alone and don't ruin his reputation.
Andy looked at Jesse's car disappear around the corner and he sighed. He wasn't really sure it was a good idea feeling so intrigued by him.
